What's in the kit?

"Hands-On Math" supplies everything you need to deliver dozens of lessons that show students the fascinating real-world value of mathematics.

The binder contains:

      Videos

The Hands-On Math kit includes two videotapes. Together, they address both staff development and classroom needs.

  • Video 1: “Hands-On Mathematics” featuring Kay Toliver (from the award-winning “Teacher Talk” series).  In this video, master teacher Kay Toliver demonstrates and explains practical strategies and classroom management techniques, including excerpts from several actual classroom lessons filmed with Ms. Toliver and her East Harlem students.

  • Video 2: “Hands-On Math Careers”. A collection of 16 short movies produced by the Futures Channel which will engage students in mathematics study by showing them exciting applications of the mathematics skills they are learning.

   Print Guide

The teaching and staff development guide in the Hands-On Math kit offers lesson resources and guidance for implementation. The contents include:

  • Why should mathematics learning be “hands-on”?

  • How to use the Hands-On Math resource kit in staff development (the kit provides enough resources to carry out four half-day professional development training sessions).

  • How to deliver Hands-On Math lessons.

  • Forty complete hands-on mathematics lesson plans, spanning grades 3 – 8.

  CD-ROM

Hands-On Math also includes a CD-ROM with these contents:

  • All 16 of the movies featured in the “Hands-On Math Careers” video, in digital format for viewing on a computer.

  • Video clips illustrating master teacher Kay Toliver's delivery of eight of the hands-on mathematics activities presented in the print guide.

  • All 40 activities in Adobe Acrobat® format for easy print out.

  • All 40 activities in Microsoft Word format, for easy customizing by teachers.

  • A format which allows teachers to select activities according to mathematics topic(s) and specific curriculum results.

How would I use it for staff development?

The kit contains everything you need to deliver four complete half-day professional development training sessions to your teachers.  You would begin by showing and discussing the “Hands-On Math” video, from the Teacher Talk series.  You would then put your teachers into the role of students, doing the hands-on lessons that are presented in the kit.  Finally, you would show the teachers exactly how to use the resources in the kit to prepare for—and deliver—their own hands-on lessons

back to questions

Is this a staff development resource or a classroom resource?

It’s both.  Use it in staff development with a group of teachers, then give each teacher their own kit to use in their classrooms.

back to questions

What equipment do I need to use the kit?

You will need a TV  or video monitor and videocassette player.  Ideally, you would also have access to a computer with a CD-ROM drive to enable you to use the CD-ROM to quickly preview content, locate resources related to specific lesson objectives, and edit the student handouts to match the exact needs of your students.
